The Hess Collection was founded by Swiss entrepreneur Donald Hess, who first purchased vineyards on Mount Veeder in 1978. Located in the historic stone winery originally constructed in 1903 by Colonel Theodore Gier, the winery first opened to the public in 1989.
The winery has earned international recognition for its wine, culinary and visitor programs while providing free public access to Donald Hess’ extensive private contemporary Art Museum.
Known as a leader in sustainable practices, The Hess Collection adheres to founder Donald Hess’ philosophy: “Nurture the land; return what you take.” The winery is best known for its flagship Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay wines and single vineyard designates from our estate vineyards in Napa Valley.
Each of the family’s wineries – in California, Argentina, and South Africa – produce outstanding, highly acclaimed wines that stand alongside the very best. Quiet leadership in sustainable practices dates back more than 30 years when Donald Hess first came to the rugged hillsides of Mount Veeder in Napa Valley, and directed that Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards be crafted while winegrowers respect and nurture the land by “returning what we take.”
Along with its mountain vineyards, Hess Wines has won acclaim for its other estate vineyards in Pope Valley and near the Carneros growing region of the Napa Valley and has long-standing partnerships on the North Coast with family-focused growers who share Donald Hess’s vision of sustainability and quality.
Hess Wines offers three distinct tiers of wines from Mount Veeder, from Napa Valley, and Hess Select, which sources fruit from the North and Central Coasts of California. Hess Wines has distinguished itself as a premium producer of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
Today, Hess Family Wine Estates is recognized as one of the premier family-owned and family-led companies in the world of wine.
