Joseph Phelps Vineyards

Joseph Phelps Vineyards is a family-owned winery committed to crafting world-class, estate-grown wines. Founded in 1973 when Joe Phelps purchased a former cattle ranch near St. Helena in California, the winery now controls and farms 390 acres of vines in Napa Valley on eight estate vineyards in St. Helena, the Stags Leap District, Oakville, Rutherford, Oak Knoll District, Carneros and South Napa.

Phelps produces Cabernet Sauvignon from seven estate vineyards across Napa Valley, in addition to a single-vineyard offering from their legendary Backus Vineyard in Oakville. Phelps also produces Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Syrah, and Eisrébe, a dessert wine made from the Scheurebe grape.

Joseph Phelps Vineyards is best known for its flagship wine, Insignia, a Napa Valley blend of red Bordeaux varieties first produced in 1974.

Thirty-three of thirty-nine vintages have been rated 90 or more points by various wine publications, including three perfect 100 point scores for the 1991, 1997 and 2002 vintages from Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate in Mr. Parker’s Historical Tasting of Insignia report, published November 2013. Additionally, the 2002 vintage of Insignia was also awarded “Wine of the Year” by Wine Spectator magazine in 2005.

In pursuit of an ideal location to grow Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, in 1999 the Phelps family purchased land near the town of Freestone on the western Sonoma Coast, planted 100 acres of vineyards, and built a dedicated winery.
