In 1975, legendary vintner and American wine pioneer Josh Jensen founded Calera (Spanish for “lime kiln”) high in the remote Gavilan Mountains, in California’s Central Coast. Calera is an American icon, and is recognized as one of the New World’s most revered Pinot Noir producers.

Wine Advocate has called Calera the “California’s Romanée-Conti”. Within the past decade, Wine & Spirits has named Calera a “Top 100 Winery” four times.

Founder, Josh Jensen, aimed to plant vineyards in limestone–rich land similar to those of the great Domaines in Burgundy. He discovered Mt. Harlan’s low-yielding, limestone–rich soils and cool, arid climate; he began planting what would ultimately become six small estate vineyards, sitting above 3,000 feet elevation.

Calera is located outside Hollister, CA, 25 miles east of Monterey in San Benito County. Our tasting room features an intimate and relaxed winery setting with gorgeous panoramic mountain views. Experience our one-of-a-kind, seven-level, gravity flow winery and our incredible underground wine caves.

Under the stewardship of Winemaker Mike Waller, each vineyard is renowned for producing singular wines of uncommon purity, elegance and aging potential. In addition, to its beloved single-vineyard wines, Calera partners with some of the top vineyards in California’s majestic Central Coast to make Calera’s beautiful Central Coast wines.
